Fix for Gmail Security Warning?

Reported by Metta Zetty | May 19th, 2018 @ 12:32 PM | in 2.0.1.5

Last week I received the following message from Google when I tried to sign into my Gmail account and send a test message using DPIM.

Is there anything that can be done to make DPIM more secure so that it won't trigger this kind of security warning?

Thanks,
Metta

Hi Metta,

Google just blocked someone from signing into your Google Account mettaseva@gmail.com from an app that may put your account at risk.

If you didn't recently receive an error while trying to access a Google service, like Gmail, from a non-Google application, someone may have your password.

SECURE YOUR ACCOUNT

Are you the one who tried signing in?
Google will continue to block sign-in attempts from the app you're using because it has known security problems or is out of date. You can continue to use this app by allowing access to less secure apps, but this may leave your account vulnerable.

This is a typical message from Google when you don't use 2 Factor Authentication. I would urge you to set up 2FA with your Gmail and Google as this would increase security with your Google account.

The reason you got your message is because you used your Google password to access Gmail from within doogiePIM. You would get the same effect if you used any other mail client such as Outlook or Thunderbird. Google would prefer you use an "Application Password" along with 2 Factor Authentication. I know it sounds quite scary to call your email clients a "Less secure app" when it really isn't. But that's Google marketing for you.

    I hope this helps.

    Chris.

PS. Your previous emails went to my spam folder. I'm not sure why as this is through Google's filters. I've whitelisted your address so I assume Google will respect your future communications with me.

    Completely befuddled on this one.

Just now set-up the 2-step verification, per your recommendation, and it did not solve the problem. Please see the attached error message along with a screenshot of my account settings.

Next, I tried to track down the help info related the error message I received:
-- Username and Password not accepted

However, I don't know where to begin in sorting this all out:

I don't mean to give up right at the outset, Chris -- but from these 2 posts, it looks like there could be any of a myriad of possible causes for this problem, and I'm already pretty burned from doing 2+ months troubleshooting on another of my primary applications.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions for what I might try next?

Would love to have GMail integrated into DPIM, but right now I'm not at all sure what it would take to get all this to work.

    With my thanks again,
    Metta

    P.S.
Thanks also, Chris, for whitelisting my email address. Appreciate your help with keeping us connected! ;-)

Your doogiePIM account settings look fine. However, did you set up an "Application Password" in Google and use that one instead of your normal Google account password?
My Google Gmail set up is exactly like this and works under testing.

    Try this test:
Open a web browser tab in doogiePIM then go to Gmail, login using your username and new password. If you can access Gmail without a problem, ensure that username and password is in the doogiePIM mail account settings.

You asked: Did you set up an "Application Password" in Google and use that one instead of your normal Google account password?

-- No. I was never offered the option of creating a new/different "Application Password".

However, I tracked down the instructions for setting up an application password, and that worked like a charm! Many, many thanks!

Mow I have a few more mail-related questions:

-- Where/how do I turn on my cc and bcc address options?

-- Do I have the option of creating any "From" address aliases that I can use with my GMail account? I have several different domains and a variety of email redirects that I would like to use when sending mail from within DPIM.

Just now attempted to send a test message to my own gmail address, and I received an error message saying: "The recipient address is not a valid RFC-5321 address."

    Please advise.

Just now tried to move my messages another way (instead of using the search function):
-- Displayed messages in list view

    -- Sorted by sender name

-- Highlighted 2 messages in the list in preparation for moving them, and I received the attached error message.

    Please advise.

Just now discovered I'm getting this error message no matter what email address I use:

-- "The recipient address is not a valid RFC-5321 address."

    One more question:

-- When I connect DPIM to GMail and check my mail, does DPIM sync with GMail or actually download the mail?

In other words, if I delete a message from within DPIM, will it also delete it from GMail's server?

In answer to your list of questions.

-- Q. -- Where/how do I turn on my cc and bcc address options?

-- A. Use the "View" menu in the Message window menu to show/hide the CC/BCC.

-- Q. -- Do I have the option of creating any "From" address aliases that I can use with my GMail account? I have several different domains and a variety of email redirects that I would like to use when sending mail from within DPIM.

-- A. The from address can be whatever you wish but I would advise you to use the same domain name as the one you send from. This is because some email servers would rejected "spoofing" addresses. Note: Use a valid form of email address user@domain.tld, eg: chris@bitespire.com

-- Q. -- Am I correct in understanding there is NO tagging option in DPIM mail?

-- A. There's no need for google style tagging because doogiePIM has folders. Use those. You could also use Flag Markers and colour highlight too. Also, consider setting up Message Rules for automatic placement of messages depending on content of subject line, sender's address, etc. See here: https://bitespire.com/help/?Mail%20Message%20Rules%20and%20Filters....

-- Q. -- Just now attempted to send a test message to my own gmail address, and I received an error message saying: "The recipient address is not a valid RFC-5321 address." Please advise.

-- A. Use a valid form of email address user@domain.tld, eg: chris@bitespire.com. Try removing any spaces before or after the address.

-- Q. -- After I've searched through my messages and identified a batch of messages to or from one individual, is there any way to move them all once into a folder?

-- A. You can select more than one message at a time and manually move those into a folder. An alternative would be to use Message Rules. Read my statement ealier about rules.

-- Q. -- Just now tried to move my messages another way (instead of using the search function): Please advise.

    -- A. Fixed in 2.0.1.7.

-- Q. -- Just now discovered I'm getting this error message no matter what email address I use: "The recipient address is not a valid RFC-5321 address."

-- A. Use a valid form of email address user@domain.tld, eg: chris@bitespire.com. Try removing any spaces before or after the address. Google is very picky about an email address so ensure there are no strange characters such as spaces or tabs before or after the text.

-- Q. -- When I connect DPIM to GMail and check my mail, does DPIM sync with GMail or actually download the mail? In other words, if I delete a message from within DPIM, will it also delete it from GMail's server?

-- A. When you "Check for messages", doogiePIM downloads the email (messages and attachments) to your local database. This means if the Gmail server goes down or your messages on the server are removed, they are still in your local doogiePIM database. If you delete a message in doogiePIM this won't delete it from the Gmail server. They are NOT sync'd.

I hope this helps and have a great day.
    Chris
